Positive Behaviour Support Nowra — NDIS Services for Local Families

This article is for individuals, families and NDIS providers who are looking for NDIS Positive Behaviour Support services in Nowra, NSW.

What is Positive Behaviour Support in Nowra?

Positive Behaviour Support in Nowra transforms quality of life by building new support strategies, skills and behaviours to meet your needs and goals.

For the individual, Positive Behaviour Support helps reduce behaviours of concern by addressing their underlying causes rather than just reacting to them. PBS promotes the development of new skills—such as communication, emotional regulation, and independence—which enables the person to have greater control over their life and participate more fully in everyday activities.

For families and support networks, PBS can reduce stress and uncertainty by providing clear, consistent strategies to respond to behaviours. It builds confidence and understanding, improves relationships, and creates a more positive and stable environment.

Our Positive Behaviour Support Services in Nowra

Positive Behaviour Support is a structured, person-centred process aimed at improving quality of life and reducing behaviours of concern.

It begins with a comprehensive assessment, including a functional behaviour assessment, to understand the underlying causes and triggers of behaviours. Based on this, a Positive Behaviour Support Plan is developed, outlining proactive strategies, skill-building approaches, and ways to respond safely and consistently.

Training is then provided to family members, support staff, and other key people to ensure they understand the plan and can implement it effectively. The implementation phase involves putting the strategies into practice in the person’s daily environment, with ongoing monitoring and review to ensure the approaches remain effective and are adjusted as needed.

Meet Roxanne Bryson, Behaviour Support Practitioner in Nowra, NSW

Hi Roxanne! Tell us about you.

I emigrated from England 14 years ago and have since lived and worked in Sydney, relocating to the Illawarra region six years ago. I am a parent of two children with disabilities, which has provided me with both personal and professional insight into working within the NDIS framework.

I am a UK-trained mental health nurse with 17 years of nursing experience, complemented by three years working as a healthcare assistant in mental health while completing my university studies. My professional background spans a range of settings, including inpatient services, acute care teams, and community mental health, before transitioning into Positive Behaviour Support. Throughout my career I have been committed to upholding individuals’ rights and delivering trauma-informed care. This is one of the reasons I transitioned into a Positive Behaviour Support role.

Outside of work, I love spending time with my family and getting out to explore the beautiful place we live. I also have a passion for op shopping, finding unique pieces for my home, and I love a good puzzle.

Do you support participants with specific diagnoses or of certain age groups?

I provide support to adults with a broad range of diagnoses. Drawing on my extensive background in mental health nursing, I specialise in working with individuals experiencing mental health conditions, including substance use disorders and complex trauma. I also have a strong professional interest in autism, ADHD and intellectual disabilities.

I am committed to supporting individuals with disabilities and/or mental health conditions, as well as their families and support networks, to help them achieve their goals and enhance their overall quality of life.

Can you share an example of how Positive Behaviour Support can impact a person’s life?

Positive Behaviour Support can significantly improve a person’s quality of life by addressing the underlying reasons for behaviours and building more effective ways to meet their needs.

For example, a person with a disability such as autism may display behaviours of concern when they feel overwhelmed or unable to communicate what they need. Through PBS, an assessment may identify that these behaviours are linked to frustration and communication difficulties. A tailored support plan might then introduce strategies such as visual supports, structured routines, and teaching alternative communication skills.

As these strategies are consistently implemented, the person may experience reduced frustration and fewer behaviours of concern. They are better able to express their needs, participate in daily activities, and build positive relationships. Over time, this can lead to greater independence, increased confidence, and an overall improvement in wellbeing.

What about a participant’s family — what impact can PBS have on them?

Positive Behaviour Support can have a significant and often transformative impact on a participant’s family. By focusing on understanding the reasons behind behaviours of concern and implementing proactive, person-centred strategies, PBS can reduce the frequency and intensity of challenging behaviours. This, in turn, helps to create a more stable and supportive home environment.

For families, this often leads to reduced stress, improved confidence in managing behaviours, and stronger relationships with their loved one. PBS also actively involves families in the planning and implementation of strategies, empowering them with practical skills and knowledge. As a result, families are better equipped to support the participant’s goals, promote independence, and enhance overall quality of life for everyone involved.
